Pregnant Women and Babies At Risk

Pregnant Women and Infants at Great Risk

Infants-at-Risk-From-Gmo-SoyGM foods are particularly dangerous for pregnant women and children. After GM soy was fed to female rats, most of their babies died—compared to a 10% deaths among controls fed natural soy.² GM-fed babies were smaller, and possibly infertile.

Testicles of rats fed GM soy changed from the normal pink to dark blue.  Mice fed GM soy had altered young sperm.  Embryos of GM soy-fed parent mice had changed DNA and mice fed GM corn had fewer, and smaller, babies.

In Haryana, India, most of those buffalo that did consume GM cottonseed ended up with reproductive complications such as premature deliveries, abortions, and infertility; many calves died. About two dozen US farmers said thousands of pigs became sterile from certain GM corn varieties. Some had false pregnancies; others gave birth to bags of water. Cows and bulls also became infertile.

Poison is “built in” to the Seed

When an insect bites into the corn and cotton plants engineered to produce Bt-toxin, their stomach splits open and they die.  Biotech companies claim that because farmers have been spraying this on their crops for years, this Bt -toxin has a history of safe use its natural bacterial form therefore, it’s OK to incorporate it into plant cells.

Seems like a good argument until we learn that the Bt-toxin produced in GM plants, however, is thousands of times more concentrated than natural Bt spray.  It is by design that it is more toxic, has properties of an allergen, and cannot be washed off the plant.

Moreover, studies confirm that even the less toxic natural spray can be harmful. When dispersed by plane to kill gypsy moths in Washington and Vancouver, about 500 people reported allergy or flu-like symptoms. The same symptoms are now reported by thousands of farm workers from handling Bt cotton throughout India.¹²

Lab Test’s Show Animals Adversely React to GM Crops

Studies confirm that several GM crops engineered to produce built-in pesticides provoke immune responses in animals. A Monsanto rat study on Bt corn showed a significant increase in blood cells related to the immune system.18 Pesticide producing GM peas19 and potatoes20 (not Bt) also provoked immune responses in rodents.

Allergic reactions are a defensive, often harmful immune system response to an external irritant. The body interprets something as foreign, different, and offensive, and reacts accordingly. All GM foods, by definition, have something foreign and different. According to GM food safety expert Arpad Pusztai, “A consistent feature of all the studies done, published or unpublished, . . . indicates major problems with changes in the immune status of animals fed on various GM crops/foods.”21

In addition to immune responses, several studies and reports suggest that GM foods are toxic – BUT IT IS VERY important to understand that it is the use of pesticides such as Roundup (a Monsanto Product) that make GMO’s toxic – NOT the fact that food is genetically modified.
